Breton camps: record growth, water sobriety, and climate adaptation in the face of data challenges.

In 2025, Breton campgrounds are booming: 14 million overnight stays (vs 8 million in 2010), accounting for over 50% of the attendance in collective accommodations in Brittany.

Colossal investments (20–25% of annual revenue) in mobile homes, chalets, heated pools, welfare areas, activities: the region is catching up and becoming the leader in accessible tourism.

But this dynamic puts pressure on local resources: water (high seasonality), electricity (pools, lighting), exposure to floods, coastal erosion, droughts, and increasingly frequent fires.

Strategic issue: how to reconcile economic growth and territorial preservation? The answer lies in a fine mastery of environmental data.

Water sobriety: sensors, remote monitoring, and concrete savings

The UBHPA, winner of a Water Management AMI from Atout France, is launching a massive action plan:

  • 88 willing campgrounds equipped with connected sensors on main meters → real-time leak detection.

  • 200 prediagnostics conducted since 2020 → personalized action plans (pressure reducers, rainwater recovery, network optimization).

  • Cost sharing via grant from Loire-Brittany Water Agency → affordable equipment.

Quantified results: an average of 150 €/month in savings per campground + sectoral trends analyzed to anticipate summer peaks.

Collateral benefit: shared data at the federation level → identification of best practices and preventive alerts on water tensions.

Climate adaptation and digital twin : anticipating to decide

Climate risks rising → urgent adaptation for campgrounds :

  • Resilient accommodations : chalets on stilts, elevated buildings, hydraulic transparency.

  • Land protections : anti-erosion rockfill, partial relocation (e.g. Cotentin: 10 ha displaced, compensated by renaturation).

  • Energy transition : solar thermal (pools/sanitary), geothermal, biomass, electric charging stations.

Major hindrances : rigid regulation (Coastal Law, PPR). Solution : an environmental digital twin that intersects actual consumption (water/energy), attendance, climate risks, land scenarios.

UrbanThink is already implementing it: visualize your campground or tourist destination in 3D, simulate adaptation scenarios, prioritize your investments.
