Introduction
In response to the increasing risks associated with climate change and rising sea levels, a coastal residential area located in Brittany commissioned UrbanThink to conduct an environmental study focused on the assessment of marine submersion risks. The objective was to provide technical support to anticipate potential impacts on the site while securing its long-term development.
Challenges
The area is situated at an average altitude of only 3.4 meters NGF, making it vulnerable to coastal hazards, particularly marine submersion and coastal erosion. The site manager needed a thorough risk analysis of the locations, equipment, and infrastructure in order to identify medium and long-term adaptation and protection solutions.
Process
UrbanThink conducted a detailed study of the territory, cross-referencing topographical, historical, and climatic data. A precise mapping of the exposure areas was produced, accompanied by a modeling of the potential impact of the marine submersion hazard. Recommendations were made to prioritize vulnerability levels and propose preventive measures to activate depending on the zones (relocation, reinforcement, access limitation…).
Results
The campsite manager now has a clear and documented territorial analysis tool, allowing him to integrate risk management into his future planning decisions. This study strengthens the resilience of the area against coastal climate challenges, while providing a solid argument base in discussions with local authorities, insurance companies, or public partners.
